What Is Validol?
Validol is a combination preparation consisting of menthol dissolved in methyl isovalerate — specifically, a 25% solution of menthol in methyl isovalerate ester. It is available in tablet form (50mg per tablet) and as drops. Each tablet is held under the tongue until it dissolves.
It is produced in Ukraine by pharmaceutical manufacturers including Farmak — one of Ukraine's largest pharmaceutical producers — and has been approved as an over-the-counter medicine in Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian pharmacies for decades.
How Does Validol Work?
Validol's mechanism is primarily reflex-based rather than direct pharmacological. When the menthol-containing tablet dissolves under the tongue:
• Cold receptors in the oral mucosa are stimulated, triggering a reflex response via the trigeminal nerve
• This reflex produces mild vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and a calming effect on the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems
• The result is a reduction in the subjective experience of palpitations, chest tightness, and nervous tension
The mechanism is similar to how menthol functions in other contexts — the cooling sensation creates a physiological response that can interrupt or reduce stress-triggered symptoms. It is not a medication in the Western pharmaceutical sense and does not have direct action on heart muscle, blood pressure, or neurological pathways at standard doses.
What Is Validol Used For?
In Eastern European medical practice, Validol is used for:
• Mild psychogenic chest discomfort — the kind triggered by emotional stress rather than cardiac pathology
• Heart palpitations associated with stress or anxiety
• Nausea, including travel sickness
• Nervous tension and mild anxiety
• As a calming agent during acute stress
|
Important: Validol is not a substitute for cardiac medication and is not indicated for genuine angina, myocardial infarction (heart attack), or any serious cardiac condition. If you experience chest pain that is severe, spreads to your arm or jaw, or is accompanied by shortness of breath and sweating, call 999 immediately. Validol is for stress-related discomfort only. |
Is Validol Available in UK Pharmacies?
Validol is not a standard stock item in Boots, LloydsPharmacy, or independent UK chemists. It is not registered as a UK or EU licensed medicine and therefore sits outside the mainstream distribution system.
However, it is entirely legal to import and sell in the UK as a supplement or as a non-licensed medicine for personal use. UK residents can legally purchase Validol through specialist online retailers that source authentic Eastern European pharmaceutical products.
When searching online, it is important to identify retailers that:
• Are UK-based (faster, more reliable delivery; subject to UK consumer law)
• Source from legitimate Ukrainian or Eastern European pharmaceutical manufacturers (Farmak, Zdorovya, Stoma, or equivalent)
• Clearly state the manufacturer and country of origin on the product listing
• Provide accurate product descriptions including menthol content and tablet count
The Eastern European Community in the UK
The Ukrainian diaspora in the UK has deep historical roots. According to Wikipedia's documented history, by the late 1940s over 10,000 Ukrainians had settled in Manchester alone — with established communities in Bradford, Nottingham, and Coventry. The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), founded in the post-war period, remains the largest representative body for Ukrainians in the UK.
Since 2022, this community has expanded significantly. The 265,000+ Ukrainians now in the UK — concentrated in London, Manchester, and major cities across Northern and Central England — represent a substantial market for familiar healthcare products from home.
Beyond Validol, this community also seeks other familiar products including Corvalol (valerian and bromine-based calming drops), Furacilin (antiseptic tablets), and other items that are either unavailable or poorly understood in the UK healthcare system.
Corvalol: Also Available in the UK
Corvalol (Корвалол) is another widely used Eastern European calming preparation — drops containing phenobarbital, ethylbromoisovalerianate, peppermint oil, and other ingredients. It has been used for decades across the region for nervous tension, sleep difficulties, and stress-related symptoms.
Like Validol, it is not available in mainstream UK pharmacies but can be sourced through specialist retailers serving the Eastern European community.
|
Note on Corvalol: Corvalol contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate. In the UK, phenobarbital is a Schedule 3 controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. The product is legal for personal use when imported in reasonable quantities for personal consumption, but resale may have regulatory implications. Always check the current legal status before purchasing or sharing. |
